How did you decide on your shop name?
Truthfully, it came to me in the middle of the night around 4 am, and I am not one of those people that wakes up and jots down their dreams and thoughts, but I did that particular time. I had envisioned the logo to a certain extent, but it really blossomed into something I really love after I contacted Etsy sellerZen Design Studio with my concept and she brought it to life, I think pictures can sometimes speak a thousand words .
When did you start crafting? What is your favourite creative outlet?
I’d have to say it all started in early childhood with my obsession with coloring books, which extended beyond the coloring books and I remember getting in big trouble for coloring on my bedroom walls, my love of art just blossomed into many things after that. I have dabbled in many crafts, scrapbooking, painting, floral design, photography and others, but the one that really stuck was sewing, so I’d have to say that sewing is my favorite creative outlet, whether it is making a bag or a dress, I love the creative puzzle process of putting things together, and I am fascinated with the concept of turning a plain flat piece of fabric into something with shape, function and beauty. I have taught myself how to draft patterns and that has been a real catalyst in designing for me. I have a whole library of patternmaking books and sewing books, I am collecting them just like I am collecting sewing machines .
What made you decide to recycle and when did you start?
I would say it is a combination of a few things. I have 7 kids (a Brady Bunch type of family) I have 3 kids from a previous marriage and my husband has 4. We can go through a whole bunch of paper towels and ziploc bags. It was making me cringe at the mere fact that these things are only used once and then thrown out. As far as the produce bags, I was inspired to make those from one of those Discovery/National Geographic type shows that was about how plastic waste was killing our sea life and taking over our oceans. I just knew there had to be a better way and began experimenting with fabrics and techniques, but at the time it was mainly for personal use, I really didn’t start thinking about selling them until I began to realize other people wanted them too and I couldn’t get out of the store without a few offers to buy them and/or people telling me “you should sell those!” I do love that I am making things that really make a difference. As corny as it sounds, I like to think that the bags I sell may save some fish from suffocation, leave less plastic ‘waste’ on our planet for future generations and make our world a more beautiful place for them, less trees cut down for paper napkins, etc. One person can spare using hundreds of plastic bags over the course of a lifetime with a set of reusable produce bags, and save a tree from being cut down for paper napkins and other disposable paper items.
What or who inspires you?
I think inspiration can come from anything or anyone, I like the beauty of nature, rainbows, for example! Things people say, the way my dog wags her tail, the clouds moving across the sky, my favorite fuzzy blanket! Inspiration can just come from anywhere, but we have to be receptive to it.
Where do you craft? What does your space look like?
I craft in a spare room/office that I share with my 13 year old son. The family computer is behind me and he is often there playing Call of Duty or other interactive games, he keeps me company sometimes. I have a long table with 4 machines on it (sewing machine, coverstitch machine and 2 overlock/sergers, I also have a spare sewing machine upstairs) my sewing area gets cluttered quickly, I have to make myself clean it on Tuesdays and Saturdays or else it would be a total disaster and a few months ago I built shelves in the closet to help store things, but I still need more room! I think when my kids all go to college, I am going to convert their bedrooms into one big sewing studio! I just haven’t told my husband about it yet! That is quite a big ‘honey do’ list.

My favorite item is the boss doggy treat bag. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=28199304
ReplyDeleteI adore my pup and volunteer at the k9 stray rescue and know how important it is to have treats handy!
I constantly am shopping around for vintage items for my store and make sure to always pass on the bag or to bring my own cloth one. These would be excellent for flea markets!
Also when shipping orders if I am using a recycled box, instead of wrapping it in brown paper, just take it apart and turn it inside out! No extra paper required.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to win!

One thing that we do to reduce paper/plastic is reuse the plastic ziplock bags. We take them home from work, wash them out, and reuse them. As for paper, when I print out my invoices I print them two to a page instead of just one. It seems small, but it makes a difference.
Thank you for this giveaway opportunity! Even if I don't win I hearted Kara's shop for the future. :)

ReplyDeleteI also go out of my way to not purchase plastic, being pregnant this has been doubley difficult because I've been craving those little bottles of tea, when I HAVE to have one I reuse the bottle for over a week before tossing it. I also make sure it's tossed in the plastic recycle not the regular trash. As for other products I buy lots of glass (mayo, mustard, glass ketchup bottles...) and then reuse them by filling them to water for storage or colored water if the bottles really original. I also buy my drinking glasses at thrift and antique stores.

I've found that if I just don't keep paper towels in my kitchen, we all use our cloths instead. If the throw-away ones were there, they would often be used. I just don't give our family the choice!

ReplyDeleteAlso, to reduce my paper waste, I reuse tissue paper from previous gifts, other bits of paper, magazines, etc. for future crafts. And I have recently begun carrying a cloth tote instead of using plastic bags.
Also, as I work in Home Organization at my job, I try to encourage people to purchase recycled plastic storage containers as opposed to non recycled plastic.

The zip-up food baggies would be my favourites (e.g. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29767539) as at the moment I'm using little tupperware containers for snacks but sometimes (cookies?) a bag would work better!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite thing that we've done to be greener is four of us decided to get together in January, buy on-sale Christmas-print (and other print) fabrics and sewed up a whole mess of gift bags in different sizes. Because all of us are participating, we don't need to worry that our gift bags will vanish into the void never to return -- we know that at least we'll get some back from each other!
Count me in for 08/29/09 :)

ReplyDeleteI reduce plastic by using my reusable bags 100% of the time. If I left them in the car, I leave my groceries in the store and go out and get them. If I leave them home, I have the put the groceries right into the cart - no bags. You'd think that would help me remember to bring them, but so far, it doesn't.

I have eight cloth bags that I use for grocery shopping. Also, I have a small nylon bag that I keep folder in my handbag for small purchases at the drug store.
ReplyDeleteOn Love for Earth's site, I like the Giant Set of 12 WHITE produce bags because they come in three different sizes and have different colored tops. These reusable produce bags are a great idea. I have two green mesh bags I kept from prepackaged produce that I reuse but they don't compare at all to the quality of the resusable bags on this site.

I use empty dry cat food bags to collect dirty litter and do not throw it away until it is full. Since it is lined to keep food fresh, it keeps the litter smell trapped in the bag. This avoids sending one plastic bag into the trash each time I clean the litterbox.
Thanks!
