Jessica has a wonderful shop on Etsy. Simply Signs has a sign for everything! Take a look and see for your self, before you enter the give away :)
*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Orland Park, IL, a suburb about 20 minutes south of Chicago. I am 26 years old, married to my high school sweetheart, and a stay at home Mom to our only son, Avery, 18 months. He is the absolute joy of my life! If there is such a thing as a mother with "free time", I also enjoy spending it gardening, being with my family and friends, cooking, and of coarse - painting!
*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
Interestingly enough, I kind of started my business by accident! Last Fall my husband was bringing our Halloween decorations out of the attic in our garage when I noticed one of our wooden yard stakes was missing a piece. I knew it was an easy fix, and I went to the store for some paints and brushes. From there I was ADDICTED! Within weeks, my garage was covered with my creations. I had no idea what I was even going to do with it all! I recieved so many compliments, and a friend even mentioned that I should look into some local craft shows, which I did. My first craft show was an absolute joke - NO crafters, NO customers, NO advertisement, NO SALES! I was so discouraged and I cried the whole way home, but I hung in there! I discovered Etsy, and opened up shop. The hardest thing about starting my business was choosing a name! For weeks my shop remained nameless, untill one day it came to me. Out of nowhere. After weeks of picking my friends brains, there is was. Simply Signs was officially up and running.
*What types of items do you have? Do you have something new you will be adding?
The very first items I ever made were yard stakes. I love doing them, but for Etsy they are just not practical, since I am sure their size and shape would make shipping costs too high! For my Etsy shop, I modified my yard stakes into simple, fancier hanging signs for inside decor. I loved doing this because I didnt have to stick to holiday or seasonal themes. Slowly I added signs for baby's rooms, along with some cute quotes. Lets just say the new ideas never stop coming! I have added wooden wreaths, and magnets to my shop as well. Who knows what I will come up with next!
*What do you like about being a seller?
Being a seller brings me many joys. I love the feeling of accomplishment I get after I finish an item, I love helping my family bring in the extra income, and most of all I love the smile on someones face when they purchase an item from my shop and say "My mother is going to absolutely LOVE this", or "This is perfect for my daughters bedroom!". There is nothing more rewarding than being able to make someone happy by doing something that makes me so happy at the same time - it's a win win situation!
*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
"Hi, my name is Jessica, and I am addicted to RIBBON!" There, I said it! I just dont know what it is, but to me the ribbon pulls the whole sign together - the colors, the vibe, the ribbon just completes the look for me. Satin ribbon is my absolute favorite, but you can probably tell that by looking in my shop ;-) I feel it brings such a classy look, along with a different texture.
*Do you have a blog?
No blog yet. Between my Etsy shop and my Facebook Fan page, I already feel glued to my laptop!
*What motivates or inspires you to create?
When I walk into my garage where my studio is, my mind starts racing! Paint brushes, acrylics, ribbon, my glue gun... they're calling out my name! Any time I see my materials laid out, I want to create. Blank pieces of wood that my husband cut for me earlier that day - a blank canvas! I cannot go near my workspace without picking up a paintbrush. It's like my private getaway - no toys all over the floor, no hyper puppies, no pile of dishes in the sink... just me time. Everyone jokes - "Dont send Jess to the garage for anything, she wont come back for hours!" If they were crafters, they'd get it! For now, I dont mind being misunderstood....
*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
Do I really have to pick just one? Well, if I do it is my "Frogs & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails" sign for a little boy's room! Seen here:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=37805524 This item combines so many of my favorite techniquines - The light and dark striped background (which I like to think of as my "signature"), my favorite theme - babies, and my favorite font. I spend ALOT of time on this one, and I am very proud of it!
Jessy is raising money for her wonderful pet - Bronx.
My 13 month old puppy (a pit bull rescue from our local no-kill animal shelter) needs a very expensive surgery! Our poor guy has two bad knees that need to be fused. At only just over 1 year old, he is far to young to be having health problems like this! Bronx is an absolute angel, and a very important member of our family. His surgery is extimated to cost around $3,000.00. 100% of my proceeds from my shop are currently going towards this cause. We are also putting together a fund raiser in our area to help out with the costs. We are hoping to meet our goal soon so our baby boy can have the surgery he needs to be the young, energetic, happy pup that he is!
