*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm from Cleveland, Ohio, married and Mom to a 6-year-old boy. We currently live in the city but I'm very much a country girl at heart. My grandfather had a farm and my family lived in a rural area from the time I was 12, so gardening, canning and sewing were things I learned from my Mom and Grandma at a young age.
*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
We moved into our current home about 7 years ago and I couldn't wait to plant a garden. It was huge hit with the local deer population, unfortunately, and I quickly discovered the only thing they wouldn't completely destroy were herbs. Reading and learning about herb gardening led to learning about traditional and healing uses for herbs. I loved the idea of making my own natural alternatives to commercial products. I started out making bath salts and home cleaning products for myself and some friends. Those friends started asking for more products for their friends and the business just naturally grew from there. I opened my Etsy shop last summer.
As for the name, I also love to sew and at one time considered building a home business around quilting and pattern design. "Leaves & Stitches" incorporates both of the activities I enjoy.
*Do you have a blog?
I do! I don't update it as often as I'd like (New Year's resolution!) but readers and comments are always welcome. It's http://leavesandstitches.blogspot.com. I’m also on Facebook and Twitter
*Where do you craft? what does it look like?
I'm lucky enough to have a small room dedicated to crafting. The look constantly changes as my interests change. Right now it holds a large table for herb product assembly, my sewing machine, computer, printer, bins of fabric, dried herbs and other supplies. In the spring I add grow lights and peat pots for seed starting; in late summer and fall there are herbs from my garden hanging up to dry.
*What would you love to add to your crafting space?
My crafting room has a lot of windows and great natural light, but that only leaves one small wall area. I have a stash of quilted wall hangings that I rotate through periodically, but I’d love to have more wall space so I could hang more than one at a time.
And I could always use more storage space for herb supplies and finished products! Shelves I could reach without climbing would be wonderful. I’m short, so I’m constantly dragging out a stool or chair to get to my supplies stashed in the closet.
Related to my crafting, I'd love to have a larger area for my herb garden. I grow some of the herbs I use in my products but most come from a wonderful organic herb company. Eventually I'd like to supply most, if not all, of my own herbs.
*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
I don’t have a supply addiction so much as an information addiction. I’m always researching something: herb uses and folklore, growing tips, gardening tips, business tips, suppliers, recipes, product ideas… I can spend hours in bookstores and libraries or online. Balancing researching with actually doing can be a challenge for me!
*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
The herbal comfort packs are one of my favorite items to make. They’re the best of both worlds: sewing and herbs! They smell wonderful and I’ve found some lovely fabrics for the covers.
Custom order requests have led to some of my favorite items. Recently I was asked to create a gift set for someone who has a lot of muscle pain from a recent motorcycle accident, and I had another request for a stress-relief gift set for someone who spends a lot of time travelling for her job. It’s very rewarding to know the items I make can help someone feel better.
