What a wonderful surprise when Zoie wanted to have a give away on this blog! Bits n' Beads is an amazing jewelry shop on Etsy! They are offering a $20 Gift Certificate to one lucky winner! And Mother's Day is coming :) Just look at all the amazing items they have to offer!
*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
Bits n Beads by Gilliauna is a joint effort between two friends and jewelry designers that have known each other for going on a decade. Leal is 21 and a college student in Seattle, WA. Zoie is in her 30's and lives in Vancouver, BC. They met when Zoie filled the role of spiritual mentor for Leal's family when he was a child where she often taught him artistic activities and artisan crafts.
*Why did you start your business?
Both of us love designing jewelry, but you can only give so much of it away before it starts to pile up. Since we were both in financial straights, this was an idea on how to help solve both of those issues. Now we make enough to finance our jewelry design activities and the amount of jewelry on-hand is better kept to a manageable amount.
*What types of items do you have?
We carry a wide variety of jewelry and accessories that are rich in both color and quality. This includes not just the traditional necklaces, earrings and bracelets but also items such as charms for purses, zipper pulls, bookmarks, eyeglass holders and badge lanyards.
*Do you have something new you will be adding?
We add new items to our shop on a daily basis. Nearly all of our bracelets, necklaces and rosaries are also one of a kind. This means that each piece is unique and special, something you won't see anyone else carrying or wearing.
*What do you like about being a seller?
I love that it creates the opportunity for me to make custom items for people. Creating a piece that is the collaboration between myself and a customer, that they can then proudly wear as an extension of their own personality and vision is very rewarding for me.
*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
Gemstones. We both have a weakness for gemstones that can, at times, get a bit expensive.
*Do you have a blog?
Absolutely. We actually have three. Our blogspot blog (http://gilliauna.blogspot.com) is a gift guide and appreciation for other artisans. Our LiveJournal blog (http://gilliauna.livejournal.com) is filled with tutorials on things we learn as we go along as well as other facts about selling and statistics concerning our own progress. We also have a Tumbler blog (http://gilliauna.tumblr.com) which is a catch-all for new product updates and other activity concerning our business.
*What do you do when you’re not being an artist? What activities do you enjoy?
I'm always an artist. I was raised that way and I think that it's not just something you do but actually shapes the way you think and see the world. My other hobbies include other artistic endeavors such as glass etching, writing and gardening. I also am an avid reader.
*What is your favorite on-line shop?
I'm not sure I have one. I have favorite people, not favorite shops. Some of those people include Loren at FruitOfTheBloom ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/fruitsofthebloom ), Jo Ann at Pottery123 ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/pottery123 ) and Lori at Dean Dyment Studios ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/deandymentstudios ). Each of these women are wonderful, talented and supportive people that are friendly and have terrific personalities to boot. I'm honored (and it's a pleasure) to know each of them.
*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
I love creating cluster bracelets, such as the Vineyard bracelet ( http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=43095433 ). I really enjoy the way the beads sound as they're added to the bracelet and the actual *feel* of the bracelet in my hands as I work with it.
*Are there other places on the net we can find you?
Absolutely. We have our own website ( http://www.bitsnbeads.com ) as well as shops on a couple of different market places and an array of social networking sites where we broadcast our newest creations as they become available in our shop. Here a couple of our links that aren't already mentioned above...
