Artisan Bread Cookbook

AND THE WINNER IS:CATHY!
CONGRATULATIONS!!

I can bake bread!! You have no idea how exciting that is! We've been married for 21 years, and this is the first loaf of bread that I've tried and it actually worked. So far I've been baking really good "bricks" and "hockey pucks", even my bread maker and I don't get along every time.

I was sent two wonderful cookbooks from Artisan Bread. Couldn't wait to try some recipes. These books where written by:

Jeff Hertzberg is a physician with 20 years of experience in health care as a practitioner, consultant, & faculty member at the University of Minnesota Medical School. His interests in baking & preventive health sparked a quest to apply the techniques of Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day (2007) to healthier ingredients in Healthy Bread in Five Minute a Day (2009). He lives in Minneapolis with his wife & two daughters.

Zoë François is passionate about food that is real, healthy, & always delicious. She is a pastry chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. In addition to teaching baking & pastry courses nationally, she consults to the food industry & is the creator of the recipe blog www.zoebakes.com. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband & two sons.

Jeff & Zoë wrote their first book, Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day (2007) so that baking homemade bread would be easy enough to become a daily ritual for everyone. That includes people struggling to balance work, family, friends, & social life (pretty much all of us). They refined their methods for refrigerator-stored artisan dough while juggling busy careers and families.

Their second book, Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day (2009), takes that same super-fast approach but applies it to healthier ingredients like whole grains, fruits, & vegetables. A dozen of the recipes are 100% whole grain, & for the first time, they’ve included a chapter on gluten-free breads.

The books are written with easy to follow instructions. There is a whole section at the beginning of each book explaining how to bake, with what, why it works etc. I read all of the instructions before beginning, since my track record with baking bread wasn't very good :)What I love about these recipes, is that you can use one basic recipe to make many different kinds of bread. In the book Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day the first recipe is the Master Recipe. So this is the one I tried. Yummy!!

It literally takes 15 minutes to make the bread dough. Then put it in the fridge and use when needed. It will store in the fridge for at least a week to 10 days. Of course it takes more than 5 minutes to rise a bit and bake, but once you have the dough in the fridge - it only takes 5 minutes to decide what you want to make with it and get it ready! LOVE this!!

You can also use this recipe to make Pecan Caramel Rolls and many other yummy recipes.

Don't the bread and rolls look wonderful? And I baked them myself!! The family was so impressed :) I do make cinnamon rolls from scratch with a recipe that includes eggs and a lot of rising time. But this will be my new cinnamon bun recipe! It's faster and tastes just as good.

  1. I've wanted this cookbook for months but haven't ordered because of the cost.

I moved to about 4000 ft in elevation 10 years ago and am just now figuring out how to bake bread at this higher elevation. As I'm learning I've been making all of our bread for almost 6 months and would love to have the recipes in this book to get more creative with. It's been recommended by many of my baker friends.

  15. I followed Plant Girls FB link here and now you've been added to my reader feed. Those breads look delicious!

I would like this book because even though I love to bake it seems I don't have time...or I'm not organized enough to have the time. Either way it looks like a book that would help me remedy that situation.
I'm going to explore the Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes a Day a little bit too. That might be making it on my wish list.

  27. I would love this cookbook because I LOVE good artisan bread but won't pay the prices for it very often, and I would love to be able to make it myself at home...nothing like warm bread out of the oven! And I love the idea of a quick process, because two kids [including an active toddler], I don't have a ton of time for fiddling around.
