*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jessica Woody; I am twenty-two years old and I live in Bixby, Oklahoma on a miniature horse ranch with my wonderful husband, Joe, and our three charming cats: Magnum, Buster, and Nozomi. The miniature horses and our kitties all have such funny personalities and brighten everyday! I love nurturing nature and I have a profound passion for recycling and transforming steel and tin cans into hand-painted, decoupage masterpieces!
What are 5 things you want people to think when they see your product?
The five things I want people to think about when they see my hand-painted upcycled decoupage canisters is:
- It is created from recycled materials and therefore “upcycled”
- It is functional (it can hold pens and pencils, be a candle votive, hold candies and trinkets, etc.)
- It is a beautiful, trendy, elegant piece of décor for your home
- It is a one-of-a-kind piece of art
- Thoughtful craftsmanship, meticulous painting and cutting, and lots of love went into this unique creation.
*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
I came up with my Etsy Shop name “Eco-Friendly Freckles” because my hand-painted, upcycled decoupage canisters are very “eco-friendly” and each one of them is painted with a glossy black background and topped with tiny white painted “freckles” that creates my signature look. My art and I are both eco-friendly and have freckles!
I started my Etsy shop after my husband suggested that I sell my hand-painted upcycled canister creations; before I was giving them as gifts to friends and family, yet I was making more and opening an Etsy shop seemed like the perfect thing to do. Now I have a place where I can also sell my handmade natural soaps, exotic and medicinal herbs, probiotics kefir grains, and vintage items.
*What or who inspires you?
I am inspired to create something beautiful and functional out of materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill somewhere. I enjoy going through my magazine clippings and yogi tea tag sayings and putting together a story for each one-of-a-kind creation. When I have gone through the magazines and picked out all of the desired images, I recycle what is left at my local library recycling bin; this makes me feel happy that I am giving back to our wonderful planet and saving some trees!
*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
I enjoyed making my “Traveling Lady” decoupage canister the most. It was a lot of fun selecting images that resemble a specific place from around the world for which the “Traveling Lady” has traveled: a bottle of French champagne from France, a preserved starfish from the ocean, and a friendly giraffe from Africa. She naturally is surrounded by plenty cash and a tower of suitcases with souvenir stickers from all of her retreats.
*Are there other places on the net we can find you?
*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
My supply addiction is definitely vintage magazines and fun-shaped tins. Even though, I have a mountain of magazines that are from this decade, I have an infatuation with vintage magazines from the 60’s and 70’s; these clippings are quite rare and are intriguing to me…I am going to be making some “new-old” hand-painted upcycled canisters soon with these vintage clippings. The fun shaped tins I just can’t pass up at garage sales, although I love working with cans, a nice tin with a lid can be used to conceal things like cookies and jewelry and will add some variety to my shop (I will be making some of these creations soon as well).
*What do you do when you’re not being an artist? What activities do you enjoy?
I have a profound interest in herbology, natural health, and aromatherapy. I work at a natural food store called “Akins Natural Foods Market” and I am always learning something new. I enjoy making tea blends and working on our organic heirloom garden and indoor organic herb garden with my husband.
Also in my free time I enjoy visiting with my favorite girls: my best-friend and twin sister, Andrea, and my wonderfully fun grandmother “Nana”Sharee. We love going to local mom-and-pop cafes, art galleries, thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, bed and breakfasts…and having picnics!
