Katie Did It Glass is an amazing stained glass shop! Don't you just love stained glass? I do! Katie is originally from Greenville, SC, but apparently her heart is in Asheville, NC. She has had her wonderful shop on Etsy since August 2007. Before we get to the Give Away Item, please read all about Katie and her wonderful shop!
How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
After falling in love with the beauty of glass, I started my business in 2000 and joined Etsy in 2007. I had a hard time trying to figure out a business name. My name is Katie and a friend pointed out to me that I should name my business Katie Did It! I told her "That is ingenious! Why didn't I think of that?!", and the name stuck.
When did you start making stained glass art? Can you tell us a little bit about the process?
I studied Graphic Arts at Winthrop University and Fine Arts at Clemson University. I studied everything from pottery to welding. After college I took a two day course in stained glass and that's all it took. I had found my niche! I loved how the colors of glass interacted with one another in the sunlight!
The stained glass process is quite involved, but I love what I do! First, I start by creating a design and hand cutting it out of several sheets of glass. Then I smooth the edges of the glass with a glass grinder. Then I wrap each piece with a copper foil tape, which is what the solder adheres to. Now for the fun part! I solder each piece together with a soldering iron, and add the decorative wire detail. This is when the piece really comes to life. I'd have to say that putting together the various color combinations is my favorite part of the whole process, and grinding is my least favorite.
What would you love to add to your crafting space?
I have a studio in my home, and would love more storage space!
Who/what inspires you?
The Blue Ridge Mountains are a constant inspiration for my work, as well as nature and music. I sell at alot of outdoor music festivals, and love how the glass interacts in nature.
Do you have a day job?
Stained glass has been my full time job for 4 years now. I feel so lucky to be able to make a living doing what I love.
What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I like making everything, but I'd have to say the 3D spheres are my favorite. They really come to life during the soldering process. I've also been having fun with the new wall accents.
