I envy anyone who can knit! My grandma tried to teach me many years ago, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. Yard by Yard Knits has some of the most wonderful scarves and baby items! LOVE the colors :)

*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a New England girl! I grew up in Maine but now live in Newton, Massachusetts. While I miss Maine, I love being near Boston. I'm a twenty minute drive from the city, historic Concord and Lexington, or quieter suburbs. There's always something to do around here when I need a break from my knitting!

*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
I opened my shop in June 2009. I had been knitting for about three and half years and really enjoyed making handmade gifts for friends. As my knitting interests grew, so did my stash of yarn. A friend of mine (Katie from Pretty Sneaky) opened an Etsy shop in the spring of 2009, and she really encouraged me to start trying to sell my knitting. Coming up with a name for my shop was a lengthy process. I originally opened a shop using my initials called SM Knits, but I wanted a catchier name than that. I remember sitting in the car on a very long and rainy drive to Nova Scotia thinking of knitting terms. "Yard By Yard" popped into my head, and I knew that was it. Afraid I might be taken for a sewer, my shop became Yard By Yard Knits.

*What or who inspires you?
I am truly inspired by other artists/crafters. I am a proud member of the Etsy Knitters Team, and my fellow knitters never cease to amaze me. Their sweaters, hats, shrugs, gloves, blankets, booties, etc continually inspire me to take my knitting up a notch.

*What do you like about being a seller?
Having a online store is something I never thought I would do. Promoting and marketing is a little outside my comfort zone. What I like best about being a seller is that it has really challenged me to grow. My mother has run her own graphic design business for over twenty years, and I would be lost without her help!

*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
I hate to admit but my weakness is clearance yarn! I love my local yarn shop (Island Yarn Company in Waltham, MA). The owner has a great store that includes several clearance bins when you first walk in. I love picking up new yarns that I wouldn't normally buy! Some of my favorite items have been made with these yarns!

*What do you do when you’re not being an artist? What activities do you enjoy?
In my professional life, I'm a social worker at a pediatric rehabilitation facility. It can be an emotionally draining job some days, so I enjoy a laid back lifestyle when I come home. I like to say I love to cook, but I don't do enough of it to make that claim! I suppose I do enjoy looking through cookbooks as a start! Anyone who knows me knows that I adore my kitty, Pheoda. She is a furry ball of joy to come home to, and she often follows me around my apartment much like one might expect a dog to do. Finally, I am currently planning my wedding for late August, so that has kept me pretty busy this spring!

*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
My favorite item is my Carnival Criss-Cross Scarf. I actually have awful memories of making this scarf since I started it on a very hot Memorial Day weekend last year. I had electricians at my apartment, so I had no electricity and therefore no fans to help cool off. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the yarn, so the scarf was unwoven and restarted many times. But this was the first item that I knit specifically for my shop, and for that reason I simply adore it. I came home from the yarn store and had to start knitting despite the heat and not being able to run a fan!
